Fleetwood Mac reunited for a tour in 2013, loosely supporting the latest deluxe edition reissue of Rumours, and nothing more than several concerts were expected, but Lindsey Buckingham had other plans. Inspired by the reunited band, he rushed them into the studio to record three new songs and one old Buckingham/Nicks tune (the jangly acoustic pop 'Without You') for Extended Play, an EP released suddenly and exclusively on iTunes on the last day of April 2013. This is most certainly Buckingham's project: he co-produces with Mitchell Froom, he wrote the three new songs, and two of the four songs ('Without You,' the piano ballad 'It Takes Time') essentially don't have a rhythm section, and Stevie Nicks seems to be there for the occasional harmony. This means Extended Play feels more of piece with Buckingham's latter-day solo albums than it does the 2003 Mac reunion Say You Will, but Lindsey does shift his style when he's writing for Fleetwood Mac. He's not as elliptical, either in his construction or production, so 'Sad Angel' and 'Miss Fantasy' wind up as big, bright, ornate, irresistible pop, reminiscent of the meticulous studio craft of Tango in the Night but, unlike Say You Will, this isn't overworked. There's an immediacy to these four songs that is not only quite appealing but it whets the appetite for another EP or two from this reconstituted and, it would seem revitalized, Fleetwood Mac.
