Zotero Free Download For Mac

Where can I access Zotero download for older version of Mac standalone for OSX 10.5.8 PowerPC, and plugin downloads for latest versions of Safari and/or Firefox for OSX 10.5.8 (Safari 5.0.6; FireFox 3.6.28)?
Latest Zotero downloads have a compatibility issue with earlier versions of of OSX, so they do not work in Mac OSX 10.5.
I found a link in discussions for Zotero 3.0.8.1, but that version only works in Mac Classic on OSX which was discontinued in OSX 10.5.
OSX Classic mode was for running aps that were designed for OS9 and earlier.
Isn't there an older version of Zotero that ran in OSX?
It would be helpful if there was a website page for older versions listed by system requirements and compatibility.

  • Zotero's download links all have the same structure, e.g. current xpi is
    http://download.zotero.org/extension/zotero-3.0.11.xpi
    3.0.8.1 is
    http://download.zotero.org/extension/zotero-3.0.8.1.xpi
etc. Same applies for the 2.1 releases etc. Generally Zotero doesn't test compatibility on systems no longer supported by their maker (i.e. FF 3.6.x and OS X <10.6). You could try see if ten four fox works with Zotero, that's probably a better bet than trying to get outdated versions of Zotero to work:

I found a link in discussions for Zotero 3.0.8.1, but that version only works in Mac Classic on OSX which was discontinued in OSX 10.5.
I'm not sure where you got this impression from. No version of Zotero has ever run in classic mode. Zotero 3.0.8.1 works fine on Mac OS X 10.5.
  • Could the later versioin file be linked at the 3.0.8.1 download URL?
I have downloaded twice with same result.
When I open the Zotero 3.0.8.1 dmg file, the app icon is greyed out with a white circle and slash over it. The first time I copied it to my applications folder and tried to open it, I got an error message that it needed Classic environment to open.
I deleted the app file and reinstalled, and got error message that it's not supported on this architecture, which is typically the error given when app is for later OS, or for Intel processor.
I downloaded dmg file and installed again with same result.
Prior to installing 3.0.5.1, I had installed Zotero 3.0.11 and it simply wouldn't open, no error messages.
I trashed the Zotero 3.0.11 app, but could there be an associated 3.0.11 system file somewhere that is producing the error message(s) when I try to open Zotero 3.0.8.1?
Also, still looking for plugin download link.
Plugin download link provided for 3.0.8.1 does not work - returns page...

  • sorry, 3.0.8.1 was a Standalone only upgrade, the 3.0.8 plugin version is under:
    http://download.zotero.org/extension/zotero-3.0.8.xpi
  • I believe all of the Standalone apps are built based on FF4+ architecture, so they won't run on PPC
  • When I preview Zotero.app file in the finder after installing,
it does not list as version 3.0.8.1.
Instead it shows - Kind: Application (Classic)
  • see above - it wouldn't run on PPC anyway. It runs on OS 10.5, but not on PPC.
  • It would be extremely helpful and an incredible time saver to have the SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS posted up front in a very prominent place!
  • The info is here
    http://www.zotero.org/support/compatibility_matrix
I've tagged it with 'system requirements to make it easier to find.
The reason system requirements aren't featured more prominently is that Zotero works for everyone with a computer less than 7 years old and an operating systems less than 5 years old (and everyone with a PC/Windows less than 10 years old or so). So having those features prominently would be a waste of time/space for something like 99.99% of all users.
  • This was discussed not long ago, but it seems that Zotero should work fine TenFourFox, which is Firefox for PPC: http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
  • I could not download the old version following these links.
  • the links above work. If you need help, you'll need to be more specific about what you're trying to do, on which system, which links you're using, and what's not working.

Zotero is a powerful tool for managing any research project. It has many professional features (there are more than 7,000 CSL-based style templates to ensure you get the citation format you need), but the core of the program is simple enough for anyone to use.

Once you've set everything up, for instance, adding some web reference is usually as easy as clicking a button in your browser (Firefox, Chrome and Safari are supported). The link will appear in Zotero's library, and you can then add more, or import local files just by dragging and dropping them onto the program.

Each of your references may be annotated with text notes, tags and more. You're able to organise them into 'collections' (folders, basically). But the best part is most of this content is indexed: type a word or two in the search box and it scans your web content, local files, notes, tags and more, listing any hits.

Your research library is stored centrally, on Zotero's servers. You have to create a free account to set this up, but it only takes a moment, and they don't need anything more than your email address. And once it's done you're able to view your current research from any device, access files or links, add notes and more.

Anyone writing an academic paper on all this can quickly generate bibliographies, properly formatted citations and more, mostly just by dragging and dropping (the program includes Word and LibreOffice/ OpenOffice addons to make the process easier).

The only real issue here is that Zotero's free account offers a mere 300MB storage space, not a lot if you're hoping to add several chunky PDFs. Basic upgrades aren't cheap, either (even 2GB costs $20/ year), although you can opt for unlimited storage for $120/ year.

Zotero Plugins

Zotero is an excellent research manager with some helpful and time-saving tools. Just beware, the free account doesn't offer much storage space.
